Metalwork at Mangere College

Mr Breetvelt’s year 11 class project is a heavy duty, long shank screwdriver. This project involves threading the shank, working an acrylic and brass handle on the engineers lathe, heat and press a flat head, mill a slotted handle and tempering the flat head tip.

Students keep their finished product and it will likely last them a lifetime.

MIT Engineering Experience Day

On Tuesday 23 June, Jason Lackay and I (Junior Tepepe Papau) attended a MIT Engineering Experience Day. Our day involved designing and constructing a bridge out of straws, ice block sticks and duct tape. We bound them together using hot glue. Our main inspiration was the harbour bridge design. Our bridge came in 2nd place for kinetic construction, but was placed 1st for looks and features. Overall, we had an awesome time at the Manukau Institute of Technology.

Experience IT in the Real World

Year10ITHolProgMiT2014

In the term 3 holidays’ four brave Year 10 Digital Technology students attended an Information Technology holiday programme at the Manukau Institute of Technology. The programme was for two and a half days and involved IT work, visits to organisations, and presentations. There is a fantastic video on YouTube called the MIT Business Career Experience 2013 and it’s under 5 minutes long.

The four students that attended were: Loli Tupou, Liz Minati, Mary A Va’afai, and Teresa Filipe all members of the Digital Technology subject for year 10.
When asked what they thought of the experience they all were excited and glad to have attended. This is the first year Mangere College was invited but we received glowing feedback and hope to be invited back for 2015. A big thanks goes to Ms Brewer for her organisation and the parents for supporting their children.
