At Māngere College we support our students in their learning, from basic math skills for everyday life through to preparing students for further study.

Teachers encourage students to demonstrate mathematical concepts from a variety of perspectives. Cross curricular activities and appreciation of diverse cultures including our local iwi is encouraged in the classroom. Students are encouraged to use technological tools appropriately and effectively in their math lessons. Our  senior maths students are encouraged to choose courses that match their career pathways. This is done through discussions with their teachers and exposure through career expos and opportunities offered by outside providers.

Our dedicated staff also provide free extra tutorial help outside of school hours where students can go for one-to-one help. The current Acting Deputy Principal Miss Ma (former HoD) developed and encouraged team Mathematics competitions for some of our South Auckland schools. In addition to the competition there are opportunities for senior students to attend Pacific Academy. This is an initiative run by the University of Auckland for students who are preparing for math and statistics externals. We continue to encourage students to sign up and take part as it compliments the learning in the classroom.

A summary of the success our students are experiencing here at Māngere College in Mathematics and Statistics:

  •  Over 99% numeracy

  • 70% of our students take maths all the way up to Year 13.

  • Teams placed in the top 3 at South Auckland Mathematics Competition (SAMC) events.
