• Monday 22 January 2024: School office opens (Enrolment Online applications) and uniform sales.

• Wednesday 31 January: Year 9 Students start at 8:45am. Students, please assemble outside Auditorium (Powhiri starts at 9am), Students dismissed at 1.00 pm.

• Thursday 1 February: Year 10 to Y13 Students start at 8.45 am. Students dismissed at 1.00 pm.
  Friday 2 February: All Students in today. 8.45 Awhina Class. 9.00 Period 1 Students dismissed at 1.00 pm.

• Monday 5 February - School closed

• Tuesday 6 February - School closed - Waitangi Day

• Wednesday 7 February onwards - school will resume on full timetable.

New Raised Pedestrian Crossing outside Māngere College

Work to commence on the new raised pedestrian crossing outside Māngere College on Monday 15 January 2024.

Information below from Auckland Transport:

Auckland Transport and our contractor Nayler Contractors Ltd are set to start work on constructing a raised Pedestrian crossing outside 24 Bader Drive in Mangere.

Where: Outside 24 Bader Drive, Mangere (Outside Mangere College)

When (start date): 15 January 2024 Hours of work 7am to 5pm and 7pm to 5am
Please note: The traffic management will remain in place 24hrs

For (duration): Approximately 4 - 5 weeks (weather dependent)

The work we’re doing.

We’re doing this work to maintain and improve your neighbourhood and to keep our communities safe. The drawings overleaf show where we’ll be working and the traffic management that will be in place. The overview of works consist of the following
• Installation of new pram crossings
• Construction kerb line and vehicle crossings
• Construction of speed table
• Line marking and signage.

We’ll do our best to start the work on time. Factors such as wet weather could mean a delayed start. If the delay is significant, we’ll notify you. We know our work can be a bit loud, and that noise – particularly at night – can be disrupting.

We try our best to avoid working at night but sometimes it is necessary in order to avoid wider disruption on the network or to get the job done faster. If we have to work at night, we’ll do our best to keep noise levels down.

We’ll handle traffic flow in and out of the area

We will implement a one-way traffic control on Bader Drive throughout the duration of the works. Traffic flow will be maintained on Bader Drive heading northwest towards McKenzie Rd. Traffic heading southeast on Bader Drive will be detoured through Ventura Street and Elmdon Street.

Please follow all signs, and traffic directions. On-street parking will be limited while we carry out the work. You may need to either park on your property or on a side road and walk to your property.

Cook Islands Language Week 2023

This year’s theme for ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is 'Ātuitui’ia au ki te au peu o tōku kāinga Ipukarea, which means, "connect me to the traditions & culture of my homeland".

The 2023 theme is an extension of last year's theme of ‘Ātuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o tōku ‘Ui Tupuna, or "connect me to the soil of my ancestors".

This year, one of our Cook Islands students Tavake Kamana was part of the steering group who came up with the Cook Islands Language theme which is pretty exciting.

During the week we had daily activities including dancing, discussions on the Cook Islands language and kai.

It was an amazing time of celebration for the whole school whanau.

PPTA Industrial Action CANCELLED

PPTA Industrial Action Cancelled
We have been notified by PPTA that their strike action has been cancelled with immediate effect. This means that there will be no rostering home of students for the rest of the term and Year 10 and 11 lessons will run today. Normal lessons for all year levels will run for the rest of the term.


Paid Union Meeting
There will be a Paid Union Meeting on Wednesday 28 June and school will finish at 12:30pm on that day.

PSTs are on Thursday, 25 May, 2.00 pm – 4.30 pm and Friday, 26 May 9.00 am – 4.30 pm.

Term 1 Newsletter 2023 is here!

Welcome to the first edition of the Māngere College newsletter for the year 2023! It's been a busy term, with plenty of exciting activities and events taking place. We're also proud to have participated in this year's ASB Polyfest. Our students worked hard to prepare and showcase their cultural heritage through traditional dance, costume and speeches. We are also excited to announce the launch of our new Kāinga house system, which has been designed to foster a sense of belonging, collaboration, and healthy competition amongst our students. PPTA - Teacher's Strike

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Industrial Action – PPTA Teachers’ Strike on Wednesday 29 March 2023

The PPTA has advised the Mangere College School Board that its member teachers at our school will be taking strike action on Wednesday, 29 March 2023 from 8.30 am – 3.30 pm.

The School Board has carefully considered the availability of non-union teaching staff and have decided that we are not able to provide normal instruction during the strike so the school will officially be closed for instruction during the above times.

If making alternative arrangements for care is difficult, we can still supervise a small number of students if required.  Please contact the office 275 4029 to indicate if your child/children will need this.

We know that this is inconvenient for parents and students alike however, please be assured that student safety is our main concern.

SCHOOL CLOSURE- UPDATED

Kia ora koutou,

We hope you and your family are keeping safe as Post-Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle continues its journey across Tamaki Makaurau Auckland.

Following conversations with other schools in our local area and the Ministry of Education. Māngere College will remain closed on Wednesday 15 February. This will enable our Senior Leadership team to assess any damage and remedy this before students return on-site. This decision has been made through consultation with the Ministry of Education, the School Board, and under the Education and Training Act 2020.

Māngere College will open for all students at 8.45am on Thursday 16 February and a normal timetable will resume.

Thank you for your support of each other during what continues to be a challenging time for so many.

P-TECH (Pathways in Technology)

P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) is a high school/early tertiary program focusing on developing digital skills and job-ready students. It is a partnership between business, high school and tertiary education. The pathway is five years focusing on NCEA Digital Technologies at high school and an Advanced Diploma in tertiary. P-TECH links students’ learning to the world of work and entry level roles. Apart from technical learning, students also gain opportunities to build work-ready skills, like communication, problem-solving, resilience, self-management and working in teams. This program is aimed at giving students opportunities to engage with the world of work so that they can successfully navigate their career pathway. This opportunity is currently available to our Year 11 students who will continue being involved for the next two years.  We will be offering the same opportunity to our year 11 students in 2023.

We are very excited at the opportunities that this involvement will create for our students, their families and the Mangere community.

Fashion Students Visit Whitecliffe Fashion Tech.

The level 1 and 2 fashion girls attended a holiday programme during the 1st week of term 2 holidays, at the Whitecliffe Fashion Tech in Manukau city. The girls spent the day learning different skills within the fashion industry ending with them learning how to use an industrial sewing machine, getting them to stitch a basic kimono for themselves.

Model United Nations (MUNA)

This term a team of Senior Social Science Students spent two days at the annual MUNA forum in Central Auckland. Over 300 students from Auckland and Northland participated, representing 100 countries from around the world. This year we were allocated Angola! Across this time we debated over remits and amendments to current global issues, which included equitable distribution of and education around COVID vaccines and promotion of renewable energy sources. The biggest challenge was learning about Angola (a country in South West of Africa) and becoming familar to their perspective on global issues. Thru this we learnt how to lobby, negotiate, and engage in impromptu political debates in order to achieve their nations’ respective goals and objectives. Thank you to Ms. Gasologa and Mr. Ras for helping to organise the logistics of this event and proving us consular support- Mikayle and Eh Htaw Kue

Elmdon Enviro Hub

This term some of our Sustainability class had the opportunity to contribute to the Elmdon Enviro Hub. This space is going to be an exciting community hub where we (as a community) can come and contribute our voices, energy and kaha to improve our community. Our vision is to contribute to the space on Elmon Street and use it as a kura as a hands on learning space. Who knows, next year it could be a regular learning space for 3SUS!? We are very excited to see what comes of it - Mairangi and Mikayle 2SUS

Senior Kororareka Russell Camp

In Term 3 this year 2SUS and 2GEO went on a camp to Kororāreka Russell to work with an organisation called Project Island Song. Our main mission was to look at the work that the group was doing in restoring the environment to pre-tiriti o Waitangi days. While we went on our camp to Kororāreka Russell we visited one of New Zealand's first capital Okiatu, we also visited one of the places where the Ngāpuhi chief Hone Heke chopped down the flagpole several times , the first time Hone Heke chopped down the flagstaff was 1846 this made the british mad so they built another flagstaff but Hone Heke continued to protest. Being at the site of where Hone Heke cut down the flag staff felt special because we went to the place where history all started for ‘New Zealand’ and how the Treaty of Waitangi was not honoured. Thank you to Ms. Gasologa, Mr. Macleod and Mr. Ras for giving up their time to take us there - Antonio and the 2SUS/2GEO group.

Our Census Focus

Did you know that the census in 2023 will impact us all? Our Geography and Sustainability classes have been looking at the future of our community and the challenges that come with intensification (more homes on the same amount of land). Government, councils, iwi, community groups use data to make decisions and plans that affect us all. By taking part in the census next year, we can all help create a better understanding of our community and what it needs. One of our major challenges in Māngere, Ōtāhuhu and Favona is lack of green space or green space that is not as usable because it is tapu or facilities such as Ambury Farm occupy it. With increased intensification of our area will we have enough space to enjoy an easy game of tag or whānau picnic in the future?
